Robert
V. Weisser.
An Appreciation.
I am indeed saddened to advise you that Robert V. Weisser,
founding president of the USS LCI National Association, died
Saturday September 13,of an apparent heart attack.
Bob's death comes less than a month after the death
of his beloved wife ,Shirley, who died on August 20,2003.
Bob Weisser was a "one-of-a-kind" original
who stepped forth at our founding meeting in Norfolk,VA
in 1991 to lead the formation of an Association of former
WW II LCI crewmen.
Under his leadership our Association grew to a membership
of approximately 3600 members giving voice and recognition
to the accomplishments and valor of the young LCI crewmen
who participated in every major amphibious invasion
from New Guinea to Normandy to Iwo Jima .
For 11 years he led the USS LCI NATIONAL ASSOCIATION
at annual national reunions from Norfolk to San Diego.
Under his leadership the Association raised thousands
of dollars in donations to the US Navy Memorial Foundation
in Washington,DC; The National D-Day Museum in New Orleans;
the Nimitz Museum in Fredericksburg,TX and the Battleship
Missouri Memorial.
In 2001 he found it necessary to relinquish the reins
of leadership due to the critical illness of his wife,Shirley.
But even then the Association leadership often sought
his wise counsel and advice.
Today every veteran who ever served aboard a Landing
Craft Infantry lost a dear friend and we are saddened
beyond measure.
